Asking for a USB Security Key?
What to do if Windows asks you to insert a physical USB security key.
If you are using a Windows computer (especially Windows 10) to set up a passkey, the system might show a prompt that says: "Insert your security key into the USB port."
This is highly confusing because you do NOT need to buy or insert a physical USB stick (like a YubiKey). Windows just uses this as a generic fallback option when it isn't sure how else to verify you.
How to bypass the USB prompt:
- Look at the prompt on your screen. You should see a button that says "Cancel", "Other options", or "More choices". Click it.
- From the new menu, select "Windows Hello" or "Use a PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint".
- Enter your standard computer password or PIN (the same one you use to unlock your computer screen when you turn it on).
- Your passkey will now be saved securely to your computer!
Alternative: Use your smartphone
If you click "Other options" and choose "iPhone, iPad, or Android device", the computer will display a QR code. Make sure Bluetooth is turned ON for both the computer and your phone. You can then open the camera on your smartphone, scan the screen, and use your phone's Face ID / Fingerprint to log into your computer! This is actually the most common way to sign in on a family or shared computer.
